Many cytoskeletal proteins interact with proteins of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM is a network of extracellular molecules which provide structural and biochemical support to surrounding. The ECM is vital to cellular processes including proliferation, adhesion, migration, polarity, differentiation, and apoptosis.
