Calcium signaling research tools - low cost, high quality
Calcium (Ca2+) ions regulate processes such as cell motility, gene transcription, muscle contraction, and exocytosis. Numerous proteins are modulated directly or indirectly by calcium including kinases and phosphatases, transcription factors and the ubiquitous calcium-binding protein calmodulin (CaM). Calcium signaling also has essential roles in the development of the nervous system from neural induction to the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of neural cells. Stimulation of cells can produce calcium signals by initiating entry of Ca2+ ions across the plasma membrane or releasing them from intracellular stores. Activation of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), for example, leads to generation of the second messenger inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3), which releases calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum. Alternatively, neurotransmitter stimulation of neurons can cause calcium to enter cells through voltage gated calcium channels in the plasma membrane.
Potential sites for pharmacological manipulation of calcium signalling therefore include: voltage gated and ligand gated ion channels, the ryanodine and IP3 receptor, Na+/Ca2+ exchangers in the plasma and mitochondrial membranes, and Ca2+ATPase in the plasma membrane.

KB-R7943 is a selective, reverse mode Na+/Ca2+ exchange inhibitor (IC50 = 0.7 µM). Also potent mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter inhibitor (Ki = 5.5 µM). Does not affect Na+-dependent transport systems or ionotropic glutamate receptors. Decreases nitric oxide and hydoxyradical formation. Displays cardioprotective properties. Find out more
Available at a low price, FURA-2 AM is a high affinity and cell permeable Ca2+ sensitive fluorescent indicator (Kd value approx 225 nM) which is ratiometric and UV light excitable. FURA 2AM is the AM ester derivative of Fura-2 that is hydrolysed by cytoplasmic esterases into FURA-2. It can be non-invasively loaded into live cells by incubation. It is widely used for ratio-imaging microscopy and measuring intracellular calcium elevations in neurons and other excitable cells (Excitation 370nm, Emission 476nm). Find out more
Our range of low cost SERCA inhibitors includes non-competitive SERCA inhibitor Thapsigargin and potent SERCA1a inhibitor Cyclopiazonic acid.
Ryanodine is a commonly used and potent Ca2+ release inhibitor. It inhibits release from the cardiac and skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum (IC50 values are 2.8 and 10 nM respectively) and has been shown to slow arrhythmia development in heart failure. It’s available from Hello Bio at low prices, and high purity. Find out more...
