Voltage gated sodium ion (Na_v) channels are transmembrane proteins involved in neuromuscular contractions, cardiac action potentials and nerve excitation. They exist as heterodimers or heterotrimers of one α- and one or two β-subunits and nine mammalian isoforms have been identified: Na_v1.1-Na_v1.9. They are found in nerves, skeletal muscles, and the heart.
