Meet our Early Career Scientist Grant Winner Joselina Berti

We’re delighted to introduce the latest winner of our Early Career Scientist Grant - Joselina Berti of the Leloir Institute, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

For the past five years we’ve been awarding monthly $500 grants to life science PhDs or postdocs to support them with their career development. To date we’re proud to have helped more than 50 life scientists with the cost of travel to conferences, publishing fees, lab supplies and more.

Our latest winner is a fourth year PhD student working in Guillermo Lanuza’s lab who plans to use the grant to help cover the cost of the 2025 edition of the MBL Neurobiology: Mechanisms & Advanced Approaches course.

When we asked Joselina how she felt about receiving the grant, she told us:

I am truly grateful to have been selected for this month’s Hello Bio Early Career Scientist Grant. I am currently in the U.S. attending the Neurobiology: Mechanisms & Advanced Approaches course at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), which has been an incredibly enriching experience so far. This grant is extremely helpful in supporting the costs associated with attending the course, and I sincerely appreciate the support. Joselina Berti, Leloir Institute, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Hello Bio Early Career Scientist Grant winner

Congratulations Joselina! First, can you tell us a bit more about what you’re working on at the moment?

I am a fourth-year PhD student at Leloir Institute in Buenos Aires, Argentina. My research focuses on a type of spinal neurons and their connectivity network in the mouse.

What excites you most about your field of research?

The complexity behind neural circuitries that makes this type of research so intricate, but also super exciting.

Which scientists working today do you most admire, and why?

I truly admire all my fellow Argentinian colleagues. Science in Argentina is currently facing one of its most difficult times due to severe budget cuts. Despite this, they continue to work with incredible dedication and resilience every day. I am proud and grateful to share with them the same scientific community.

What do you think are the biggest challenges currently facing life scientists and their work?

I believe I already touched on this in the previous question. One of the biggest challenges is the enormous gap between the resources and opportunities available in Argentina compared to those in other parts of the world. Despite that, excellent science is still being done, so it’s worth betting on Argentine science.

And finally… what's your favourite science quote?

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world” - Albert Einstein.
