Meet Our Lab Heroes Awards™ 2021 Highly Commended Nominees: Naciye Magusali

We’re delighted to introduce another of our Lab Heroes Awards™ 2021 Highly Commended nominees! Naciye Magusali of the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, UK, was nominated by her colleague who praised her ‘single-minded dedication’ to Alzheimer’s research throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. She is described as a ‘talented young scientist’ and a ‘quick learner’ whose immense efforts allowed her group to continue working efficiently during COVID-19.

Naciye is a first-year PhD student in Neurodegenerative Disease and holds a master’s degree in Neurobiology from Radboud University, in the Netherlands. As her first master’s project, she developed an in vitro phase separation model. She has also investigated the function of a new risk gene, OAS1, for Alzheimer’s disease as her second master’s project under the supervision of Dr Dervis Salih at UCL.

We spoke to Naciye about her hectic lab timetable and the importance of celebrating life science researchers…

Congratulations, Naciye! How did it feel when you found out that your colleague had nominated you as their Lab Hero?

I felt honoured to be nominated for the Lab Heroes Awards. Knowing that my effort and work in our research is acknowledged by my colleague felt very supportive.

How did it feel when you found out our judges had chosen you as 'Highly Commended'?

It was quite unexpected to be chosen as a ‘Highly Commended’ Lab Hero. As a young scientist, it is delightful to feel that my hard work is being recognised.

Why do you think it’s so important to celebrate life science researchers, and what more could be done to show life scientists recognition?

Often the impact of the research and researchers in the scientific community is set in the boundaries of their disciplines. One way of spreading the ideas and findings of the researchers into the wider community is to celebrate the outstanding contributions with awards just like the Lab Heroes Awards!

Did you always want to be a scientist when you were younger, and if so, why?

Not until I realised I was a person that likes paying attention to details. When this came together with my curiosity of how our body works and how it deteriorates, I decided to become a scientist.

What does a typical day in the lab look like for you?

It is quite hectic! I run between two labs in different buildings to culture myeloid cells and perform my experiments.

And finally… what’s your favourite science quote?

Here is one that I like: "Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known." - Carl Sagan
