Meet our Early Career Scientist Grant Winner Md Abu Hanif
It’s time to meet another of our Early Career Scientist Grant winners! Md Abu Hanif is a PHD student at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and is the latest recipient of our monthly $500 grant awarded to an early career life scientist to help support their career.
Md Abu Hanif is currently working in Professor Toril Holien’s lab in Trondheim, Norway, and will use the grant to help fund his research stay at the University of Lyon, France, where he wants to learn more about 3D modeling for his current PhD project which involves setting up a 3D scaffold model of the bone marrow.
We asked him how he felt about receiving the grant:
Never stop dreaming, you never know which of your steps count. This grant might seem small, but it is a booster for young researchers like me. Actually, this is the first scientific grant I’ve received and I feel overwhelmed and motivated to step ahead. Md Abu Hanif, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway, Hello Bio Early Career Scientist Grant winner
Congratulations! First, can you tell us a bit more about what you're working on at the moment?
Currently I have two major projects, one is to develop a 3D model of bone marrow and investigate hematopoiesis and immune microenvironment crosstalk and establish phosphoflow.
What is it about your field of research that gets you most excited?
I think I am mostly fascinated by immunology, immunotherapy cell therapy, etc.
Which scientists working today do you most admire, and why?
I admire Garry Nolan, Sean Bendall, Bernd Bodenmiller, and Bjørn Tore Gjertsen. I admire the first three for creativity and advancing science. Bjørn Tore Gjertsen is my scientific mentor who has triggered science in me.
What do you think are the biggest challenges currently facing life scientists and their work?
I think the biggest challenge is still publish or perish. Getting poor money to conduct research and to meet the global need is the ultimate challenge nowadays.
And finally… what’s your favourite science joke?
Q: Why can’t you trust atoms?
A: Because they make up everything :)
