Amazing Science-Inspired Art & Jewellery
As well as living and breathing life science on a daily basis here at Hello Bio, we’ve also realised that we really want to wear science and hang it on our walls!
When we exhibited at SfN last year, we loved all of the science-inspired art and jewellery exhibitors there so much that we wanted to share their amazing work on our blog.
So, here are some of our favourites from SfN, as well as a few that we’ve spotted elsewhere online. And yes, we apologise in advance for what this might do to your bank balance…
Two Photon
Two Photon are the two-person team of environmental scientist Tera Johnson and PhD candidate in Neuroscience Christine Liu. Based in California, USA, this talented duo not only make and sell science zines and incredibly sweet sciencey pin badges on their Etsy shop, they also paint stunning, original murals inspired by scientific concepts.
We’re currently coveting the White Sagittal and the Silver Erlenmeyer Flask enamel pins (though if we’re honest, we want them all!)

Greg Dunn
Neuroscientist Greg Dunn combines his passions for Japanese art and neuroscience to create these incredible original artworks in the Asian sumi-e style.
Greg says: “Neurons may be tiny in scale, but they possess the same beauty seen in traditional forms of the medium (trees, flowers, and animals).” We couldn't agree more!
This print of Hippocampal Formations is just stunning:

Artologica
“Inspired by science, expressed in paint” is Artologica’s tagline. Artist Michele Banks paints biological images including cells and viruses, and sells them as both prints and scarves on Etsy. She also makes little paintings in petri dishes, which we absolutely love too!
We have to say that Michele’s scarves are our favourites though, like this Neuron Dots Silk Chiffon Scarf. What a perfect gift for a life scientist!

Surly-Ramics
Amy Davis Roth, AKA ‘Surly Amy, ’ is the the creator of Surly-Ramics which, according to their website, has now created over 17,000 handmade necklaces. Wow. These unusual necklaces are inspired by nature and science, and feature neurons, bacteria, fossils, planets, and more.
As well as creating jewellery, Amy is the author and illustrator of The Feel Good Bar and Grill – a fictional story for all ages about robots who live and work on the moon Enceladus. Find out more about Amy and all her fantastic science-inspired projects over on her website.
It's definitely too hard for us to pick a favourite piece from the huge Surly-Ramics collection, but we think this sparkly E-Coli necklace is so great! We never thought bacteria could look so pretty…

Laura Bundesen
Laura Bundesen creates magical, multi-coloured representations of the human brain using hand embroidery and other materials. Laura says on her site that after receiving a fantastic reception to her pieces: “I have no plans to stop exploring the brain in all its complexity and beauty.” Hurray, the world needs more science art!
Laura’s ‘Rainbow Brain’ series is simply wonderful. A mix of fabric collage and embroidery, this ‘Blue’ brain piece represents neurons connecting and making connections:

5. Somersault18:24
We absolutely LOVE somersault18:24’s science-inspired jewellery. Created by scientist duo Idoya and Luk, their passion for supporting science and giving science “the attention it deserves” shines through in their creations.
They describe their shop as being “for you if you are passionate about science and want to reflect it in the jewelry you wear. There is so much beauty in science, this is your chance to show it to the world and open other people's eyes.”
If you’re coveting this beautiful DNA necklace like we are, in buying it you’ll be supporting science education, as Idoya and Luk will invest $5 of the profit into educational resources for scientists, students and teachers:
Elin Thomas
Last but by no means least, we first spotted these incredible crochet petri dishes by Elin Thomas on Facebook... and at first glance thought they were real!
Made-to-order, these would make a gorgeous, unique gift for any life scientist that loves their lab. We just can’t stop looking at them, they’re so bizarre and beautiful!
