 GABA receptors are activated by the major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the CNS, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA):

• GABA_A receptors are ligand gated ion channels; they are pentameric proteins and are made up of 5 subunits belonging to different families (α1-6, β1-3, γ1-3, δ, π, ε, ρ, θ). They contain an integral chloride channel, and have modulatory sites for barbiturates, neurosteroids, ethanol and benzodiazepines.
• GABA_B receptors are metabotropic G-protein-coupled receptors; they exist as heterodimers of GABA_B1 and GABA_B2 subunits, both of which are required for receptor function. The GABA_B1 subunit is responsible for binding GABA and the GABA_B2 subunit interacts with the G protein.
