Silvia Radrezza, Shevchenko Lab, Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, Germany
"Being a Ph.D. student is a journey filled with exhilarating scientific discoveries, collaboration with brilliant minds, and the thrill of hands-on experimentation with cutting-edge instruments. Yet, it is also a path that winds through solitary hours in the lab, experimental setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. In the midst of this intricate journey, I find myself exceptionally fortunate to have Dr. Silvia Radrezza as a mentor, a guide and, most importantly, a friend.
Dr. Radrezza symbolizes the essence of mentorship, seamlessly blending support, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to our academic pursuits. She navigates the complex path of research with discipline and impeccable organization, illustrated by her array of post-its. She’s always quick in her feet handling multiple projects, talking to her many collaborators, presenting papers for our journal clubs and presenting her own work in conferences that are around the world and even this busy schedule never deters her from having a song in her mind and a dance in her step. This approach to her work not only instills a sense of order but also infuses joy into the environment.
What sets Dr. Radrezza apart is her remarkable ability to lead with both competence and compassion. Despite her packed schedule, she remains approachable, creating a relaxed and positive atmosphere where trivial questions are met with enthusiasm and thoughtful responses. Her mentorship extends beyond the realm of scientific inquiries; she encourages open dialogue, making discussions about any topic comfortable and constructive.
Apart from excelling in her work, one of the most commendable qualities is her balanced approach to academic and personal life. Witnessing her seamlessly integrate her professional responsibilities with a rich personal life is not only inspiring but also a testament to the possibility of achieving harmony in both spheres.
Dr. Radrezza's contributions to our academic journey extend far beyond the laboratory, shaping not only our scientific understanding but also fostering a community of support, positivity, mentorship therefore helping me to grow in science as well as a person. For these reasons, I would say she is not just a lab hero but also my personal hero and it is with immense respect and gratitude that I nominate Dr. Silvia Radrezza for this Lab Hero Award."
