Early Career Scientist Grant FAQs
Our Early Career Scientist grants have helped many researchers, and it is quick and easy to apply. Below you will find the answers to some Frequently Asked Questions about the grants and the application process.
Who can apply for an Early Career Scientist grant?
To be eligble, you have to be a current life science post-graduate or post-doctoral researcher, and you must have received your highest degree (BSc, MSc or PhD) within the past 10 years
How do I apply for the grant?
You will need to complete a short form, describing how you would intend to use the grant. After you have submitted your application, we will need a short statement from your supervisor / PI to confirm your application.
How do I know if you have received my application OK?
Once you have submitted your form, you will be directed to a screen confirming that your application has been submitted. If you get to this screen, then you can relax - we have received your application! You will also receive an automated email with a copy of your completed application for your records. If you don't receive this email - please do check your junk mail folder.
What can I spend the grant on?
The grant is very flexible. It could be used for anything that would help further your scientific career, for example:
- Fees associated with publishing in open access journals (eg. Article Processing Charges).
- Virtual conference registration fees
- Travel expenses to a conference
- Or anything else to help support your research & career!
In addition, grant winners will also receive a 5% discount voucher for three career development sessions with Chaperone.
How is the winner selected?
Once you submit your form, your application will be entered into a draw and the winner will be selected at random.
When is the draw made, and when will I find out if I have won?
A draw will be made on the first Thursday of each month. Anyone who has submitted an eligible application in the month prior to the draw will be included. Winners will be notified by the second Thursday of each month. Please note - we only contact successful applicants, so if you don't hear from us, it will mean that you haven't been successful in that month's draw. Once we have confirmed the details with the winner, their win will be announced on our blog here: Early Career Scientist Grant winners
How much detail do you need in my application?
There is no need to go into excessive detail in your application. Please just briefly state how you are intending to use the grant. If you are successful, we will ask you for more detail if we need it.
Why do you require a supervisor's statement?
We require a short statement from your supervisor. This is just to confirm that you are an early career scientist, and that your application is genuine. We only require one supervisor statement, even if you apply multiple times throughout the year.
If I am not successful, can I apply again?
Yes! You may enter each month but to be fair to all - if you win an award, you will not be eligible to enter again for a period of 12 months. If you wish to enter each month, you must resubmit your application each month. However supervisor statements do not need to be re-submitted each month.
