Nicholas Everett is nominated in the Lab Heroes Awards 2021
Nicholas Everett, Bowen Laboratory, The University of Sydney, Australia
"Dr Everett is an exceptionally talented and hardworking postdoc in my team; importantly he's also a great person! Nick makes so much of what my team does possible and without hesitation goes above and beyond to deliver not only on his own projects but also to support the broader mission of the team. We are very lucky to have him. Nick is already operating at a level well beyond his stage and has a bright future ahead of him. I couldn't think of a more deserving candidate."
Michael Bowen, Brain and Mind Centre, University of Sydney, Australia
"I met Dr Nick when he was doing his Master's in my lab at Macquarie Uni, and since then I've never really met anyone with such a talent and passion for teaching and helping others around him. Nick is simply perfect for this prize because he doesn't just help with your issue in that moment, he wants to know the whole project, searches for papers, discusses the knowledge with you, and lets you understand the options you have, rather than doing it for you. Before he became a PhD I knew from the beginning he would be an amazing Lab Leader someday, because that's what a leader does, worries about your goals and issues and tries to solve them together."
Priscila Costa, Behavioural Neuropharmacology Lab, Macquarie University, Australia
"Nick was my honours thesis supervisor and is the reason I considered doing a PhD in the first place. His knowledge is astounding but this alone is not what makes him a phenomenal teacher and mentor. It is his ability to care for those he supervises. It is his patience and kindness for his mentees. He always has time for us, despite being an accomplished researcher who works incredibly hard day in, day out. He builds up those around him to give them the confidence to accomplish their goals whilst also providing them with the skills necessary. I could not have wished for a better honours supervisor and introduction to research. I cannot recommend Nick highly enough as a Lab Hero."
Timothy Hill, Clemens Lab, University of South Wales, Australia
"Nick is a post-doctoral researcher and a part of my PhD supervisory team. Nick consistently goes above and beyond when it comes to helping out in the lab.
Nick has been critical in training me in the key skills and techniques of my field. These include, but are not limited to, transcardial perfusions, tissue extractions, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, catheter surgeries, intravenous self-administration techniques and imaging techniques. The training he provides is comprehensive and thoughtful and has equipped me with the skills to not only conduct my experiments independently but also bring these techniques to laboratories beyond my PhD.
Perhaps the most invaluable part of having Nick as a part of my supervisory team is the mentorship he provides above and beyond tangible academic duties. Nick has shown evidence of leadership in times of crisis and a selfless ability to support and advocate for more junior members of the team. Nick is extremely approachable, open, and honest when engaging in discussions ranging from career trajectories, team culture and navigating the unspoken rules of academia. Nick takes his mentorship seriously, always ensuring there is time dedicated to his students and for that I am very fortunate and grateful to have him as a part of my supervisory team. I wish to express my gratitude by nominating Nick for the Hello Bio Lab Hero Award."
Rhianne Scicluna, Bowen Laboratory / Psychology, The University of Sydney, Australia
"In addition to managing his own research and teaching workload, Nick has always gone above and beyond to help out the fellow researchers in the lab. He takes time to help trouble-shoot problems, design experiments, analyse data, edit and contribute to manuscripts. He is committed to ensuring everyone in the lab succeeds in the projects and brings the best out in everyone. He is always a positive and motivated individual who refuses to let setbacks get him down."
Anand Gururajan, Psychology, University of Sydney, Australia
"Nick is a fundamental mentor in our laboratory. He takes every opportunity he can to use as a teaching moment for all students in our lab despite his full work load. He makes a huge effort to give his feedback on work in a critical but constructive way and it always contributes to improving the work quality. He personally taught me how to conduct important surgeries for my studies which was very time intensive and now I’m proficient at performing these and have passed this knowledge on to others."
Joel Raymond, Bowen Laboratory / School of Psychology, The University of Sydney, Australia
