Stefano Varani is nominated in the Lab Heroes Awards - TM
Stefano Varani, BioERA group, Veneto Institute for Molecular Medicine, Italy
Reliable, ingenious, calm
"Every lab has that one person who somehow makes everything work. For us, that person is Stefano. He’s the go-to problem solver, the steady hand behind every technical challenge, and the quiet force that keeps our lab running smoothly. From programming complex image analyses in MATLAB to fine-tuning the two-photon microscope, Stefano deals technical problems with impressive skill and patience. When something does not work (whether it’s a laser, a lamp, or even a hydrogel) he’s the one we call. And, without fail, he finds a way to solve the problem. But Stefano’s contribution goes far beyond technical expertise. He’s the person who checks in when experiments go wrong, and who brings calm and perspective when the lab feels like chaos. His practical advice often turns into life advice, reminding us that science isn’t just about data: it’s about people, persistence, and curiosity. Stefano embodies the spirit of teamwork that makes research not only possible but enjoyable. Our lab wouldn’t be the same without him: he’s truly our everyday hero."
Nominated by Francesca Tomatis, Gagliano's lab in BioERA group, Veneto Institute for Molecular Medicine and University of Padua, Italy
