"My laboratory hero, Dr Jelena Martinović, is someone whose presence truly transforms everybody around her. She is not just a brilliant scientist, but also a constant source of inspiration and guidance to everyone in the laboratory. With an incredible ability to think outside the box, she approaches every challenge with a fresh perspective, often finding simple yet brilliant solutions to problems that seem unsolvable at first glance. When confronted with complex experimental challenges, she has a unique ability to simplify the issue and get straight to the core, effortlessly solving problems that initially seemed impossible. She had every opportunity to pursue a successful career abroad, where she could have easily integrated into established scientific communities and found ideal working conditions. Yet, in a time when many scientists are leaving our country in search for better opportunities, she made the conscious decision to stay and contribute to the advancement of science here, where the need for skilled professionals is ever-growing. From the very beginning of her career, she has been driven by a desire to make a lasting impact on the local community. She has actively promoted science in schools, from kindergartens to universities, encouraging young minds to explore research. Her efforts to mentor doctoral students further exemplify her dedication to nurturing the next generation of scientists. No one can say they have worked with her and not benefited from her expertise, whether it’s through practical, technical advice or a timely word of encouragement. She takes the time to understand others’ struggles and provides solutions that allow everyone to succeed. Beyond her technical prowess, she has a unique ability to mediate and resolve conflicts within the laboratory. As in any collaborative environment, disagreements arise, but she has an innate ability to keep the peace, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard and that solutions are reached without leaving anyone feeling unheard. This ensures that the laboratory remains a positive and productive space for everyone. However, despite all of this, she has never truly received the thanks she deserves. We all know how much we owe to her, and how much her presence means to our work. It’s difficult to express just how grateful we are to have her with us, as she has made an immense impact on all of us—not only as a colleague but as a true hero in our daily work.
