Genuine, Brilliant, Steadfast
"I am thrilled to nominate David Nowak, an exceptional MD/PhD student in the Mantsch Lab, for the Lab Heroes Award. Over the past three years, David has consistently demonstrated unparalleled technical expertise, leadership, and creativity, all while exemplifying the highest standards of professionalism and collegiality. David has successfully led three independent research projects simultaneously, a testament to his exceptional organizational skills and intellectual drive. His ability to manage complex workflows while maintaining attention to detail reflects his remarkable capacity for multitasking and his commitment to excellence. Furthermore, David has written and submitted a competitive grant, showcasing his initiative and dedication to advancing his research goals. Technically, David has mastered an impressive array of skills, including coding, catheter and stereotaxic surgeries, DiOlistic labeling, cryo-electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. However, his impact extends beyond his own work. He is a natural mentor who has trained numerous students and technicians, creating a collaborative and supportive environment within our lab. David’s creativity and problem-solving abilities are unparalleled. Whether addressing everyday lab challenges or tackling complex research questions, he consistently devises innovative solutions. His insatiable curiosity drives his exploration of the roles of microglia in substance use disorders, a field in which he has also taken on a leadership role by founding and facilitating a monthly Microglia Journal Club. Equally notable is David’s character. He is polite, inclusive, and modest, fostering a cooperative environment where the shared goal of solving important scientific questions takes precedence. He actively supports his colleagues, offering thoughtful feedback and actionable suggestions that enhance the quality of their projects. David’s technical expertise, intellectual leadership, and collaborative spirit make him a truly outstanding candidate for a Lab Heroes Award. His contributions have already left a lasting impact on our lab and the broader scientific community, and I am confident that he will continue to excel in all of his endeavors."
