Essential, puzzle-wizard, dedicated

"Raymond is an exceptionally skilled organic chemist and a true problem solver. He’s the go-to person whenever an experiment doesn’t go as planned, and somehow, he always finds a way to make it work. He supports numerous PhD projects, whether it’s for troubleshooting a stubborn reaction, refining a synthesis strategy, or making that valuable compound needed for your project. His genuine enthusiasm for chemistry, rigorous way of working and interest in the project’s objective makes his contribution very valuable and appreciated. At the same time, Raymond is far more than a supporting force. Over the years he has grown into an independent chemist capable of true “rocket science”. Beyond his technical expertise, Raymond makes the lab function as a well-oiled machine. He takes initiative to improve daily operations; from organizing supplies, setting up guidelines to ensure we work safely, and creating clear processes that make everyone’s life easier. He also brings people in the lab together by initiating hands on training sessions, as well as a dedicated Organic Chemistry meeting within the lab, creating a regular space for knowledge exchange and collaboration, generously sharing his experience and practical tips. And while he keeps us serious about safety and science, he also makes sure the lab is a fun place to be. His creativity shines in the puzzles and escape-room-style challenges he designs for group events. Outside the lab, he’s the one you want on your pub quiz team (he somehow knows everything), and inside the lab, he’s the person you turn to when you need advice or encouragement. Always ready with a listening ear and practical advice whether for troubleshooting an experiment or a tough day. The fact that he’s been asked multiple times to serve as paranymph, a traditional Dutch honor given to close and trusted colleagues at PhD defenses, speaks volumes about the respect and affection he’s earned from so many of us. In short, Raymond is the heart of the lab, the one who make science run smoothly, keep spirits high, and makes everyone around him better."
